As the show approached they gave tickets to family, friends and acquaintances, resulting in a sell-out.Ī local band coming home a resounding success and selling out the country’s largest venue attracted a lot of media attention, and a representative of Island Records arrived to watch one of U2’s most powerful performances of these early years. Personal deadlines were looming, and the band used the last of their money to book Dublin’s National Stadium and advertise their return from a triumphant tour of Britain. What little money they had was back in Dublin, and Adam Clayton paid his way back by selling one of his two bass guitars. U2 had taken on their first tour of clubs in the UK, and despite moderate success ended up more or less broke at the end. This concert is one of the most well-known amongst U2 fans, aided by the truth about it having a somewhat legendary quality.

Out Of Control (18) is from an unknown source, probably a TV or radio broadcast recorded on CC.Īll in all, below is what probably would have been a better tracklist: They are somewhat tinny, possibly from a CC tape. These copies are taken from a radio broadcast, sadly with fragments of the surrounding program included. Live My Life Tonight, Trevor, Inside Out and Jack In A Box are from the 1978 first CBS session, which was abandoned because the band were unprepared for studio work. These tracks are somewhat flat, possibly taken from the Early Demos EP in the iTunes U2 boxset (especially as they are tracked in the same order). Street Mission, Shadows And Tall Trees and The Fool are from an earlier 1978 self-funded session, also for a demo tape. Life On A Distant Planet, Twilight, Another Time, Another Place and Alone In The Light are from a self-funded 1979 session to produce a demo tape, and sound quite clear, presumably a very close generation to the original tape. A Day Without Me is from the 1979 U2:3 session. The Dream Is Over is an unreleased track originally recorded for Another Day’s B-Side then dropped in favour of Twilight.

These tracks are all quite clear, so they are probably from a high quality download or a good transfer from vinyl.

Out Of Control (3) was A-Side of the 1979 single (entitled U2:3), Boy-Girl and Stories For Boys it’s B-Sides. Silver CD is the term used for made in a factory like a legal CD).Īnother Day was the 1980 single, Twilight it’s B-Side. The discs were compiled in 2005, and are silver CD pressings (if you didn’t know, unauthorised CD and DVD releases are in recent times quite often burnt discs from home PCs or specialist burners.

The first disc comprises the CBS singles (1979, 1980) and a fair proportion of known demos, the second the complete concert that got them their Island Records deal (which lasted for a quarter century). Around twenty-five songs are known to have been written by the band by the time of their first album, but only six made it onto the 11-track disc, with a few more being reworked over the next three years. From very early on two things became clear: firstly, that a band playing covers of Peter Frampton, The Rolling Stones and The Ramones would not get far, especially in the virtually non-existent Dublin music scene and secondly, that they couldn’t really play the covers very well.Īs a result, they soon turned to writing their own material (although they did get a minor TV gig by telling a scout that the set of Ramones songs they played him were their own – they played a real U2 composition on the show).

was a decent musician, the rest just had instruments they knew how to play some chords on. For my first genuine post, U2’s first studio work and first stadium show.
